Music is a fair and glorious gift of God; and it lies very near to theology. Above all, music is taught at Messiah Lutheran Classical Academy because it is a gift from God that delivers His Word. A music education also teaches children to think in action and to appreciate music as an art. In addition, music equips them with a tool for learning other subjects. Students at Messiah Lutheran Classical Academy participate daily in music’s highest role as a vehicle for God’s Word. The most important thing music can teach is the faith. For this very reason, the Lutheran Church has a rich musical heritage. This heritage shows a keen awareness by our forefathers of the important connection between Word and song. We have hymns and liturgy that present the Gospel in a unique and beautiful way. Music also trains the mind. The ability to make music demands thinking in action. This skill is built through the study of musical performance. Recent studies have revealed a connection between musicians and above average test scores. The study of music improves cognitive development and helps a child’s performance in other subjects. It shows children that successful results can be achieved through hard work. The appreciation of music helps children make educated decisions about their music choices. We are surrounded by music everywhere we go from a grocery store to a performance hall. A music education helps our children decide what music is valuable to them. Music deserves a place in our curriculum based on its own merits, but in addition, it acts as a teaching tool for other aspects of our curriculum and life. Most of us learned the alphabet through song. This kind of song or chant can be used as a means of fact memorization. This is highly effective within the classical model of education. Childhood songs are very rarely forgotten, and therefore, they are the perfect medium for presenting the grammar of different subjects. Finally, we look at what gives music its real appeal—it is simply enjoyable. Music has always been used in social settings as a form of entertainment. Through music, friendships are built, families are united, and countries are identified. We are pleased to offer the students of Messiah Lutheran Classical Academy the opportunity to read music, play piano, sing the songs of our country and church, and enjoy each other in musical activity while strengthening their faith in the process.
